On Friday 14th November, it's Children In Need Day! If you would like to lighten your purse or wallet, and get rid of a few coppers, we'll be having a super-sized Pudsey laid out in the hall which we are going to cover in coins. It's also going to be a non-uniform day, and we're asking that if anyone (children especially!) would like to bake any buns, we'll sell them at break and raise even more money! All the money will be given to the Children In Need appeal.

On Tuesday 11th November, everyone at school will be going to the war memorial on Shaw Lane for a short remembrance service. We will be there shortly before 11am, and will hold a 2 minute silence in memory of everyone who lost their lives, serving their country.

In October, Mr Lucas took at team of very competitive children to Cannon Hall, to take part in the annual cross country run. Over 400 children took part in all, from schools across the Barnsley area. 20+ children went from Shawlands from Y5 & 6 (as well as 6 from Y4, cleverly disguised as Y5's!) and we gained achieved great success! The Y5 girls team in particular did extremely well, finishing first as a team. Out of the first 10 Y5 runners to finish in the race, 7 of them were from Shawlands! Lucy Frost won the race, with Becky Jackson finishing a close second! The Y5 boys team finished 3rd overall, Y6 girls also finished 3rd in their age group, and the Y6 boys finished 12th. Overall, it was an outstanding afternoon!

A reminder for parents, children and drivers...... please be careful in and around the school car park in a morning and particularly at the end of the day. Please stick to the path, and drivers, please don't use the school gates to turn around. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please make sure that all children have indoor footwear at school. The school floors are slippery when only wearing socks, not to mention the obvious problems if the fire alarm goes off. There was an occasion last week where the fire alarm sounded, and it had been raining quite heavily. Some children had no indoor foot-ware, and got VERY wet feet.

School has a much-needed facelift! It's perhaps long overdue, but over the summer, school has had a lick of paint. Most of the classrooms and corridors have been painted, along with the hall. The old decor was a little dated to say the least, and so fresh paint will liven things up a little. The classrooms and corridors have also had new carpets, not just making school look better, but making it a safer place too, reducing the risk of slipping. The only classrooms not to have been decorated are nursery (this was only recently done), and Mr Lucas & Mrs Gilroy's classrooms. These will be decorated during October half term.

Just a reminder that the children are back at school on Wednesday (not Monday!) Monday and Tuesday are INSET days, where the staff will be - as always - working away tirelessly!

After four years at the school, Mrs Dean has left for pastures new. Mrs Dean transformed Foundation Stage 1 during her time at Shawlands, and everyone wishes her well in her new deputy heady role in Huddersfield. Mrs Williams will be teaching FS1 until Christmas.
